Over-Sized watches, also known as “Chunky” or “Boyfriend” watches are all the rage among the taste-making elite. These burly pieces resemble bracelets more than timepieces due to the fact that they are typically worn loosely, allowing them to swivel around the wrist with a satisfying bauble-y clinking sound. Invicta’s Corduba White Mother of Pearl Dial Black Polyurethane 18k Gold Plated Quartz is a stellar example of this trend. It is a whopping 39mm with a pearlescent dial and a luxurious golden finish. Oh, and it tells time.

Watch Features:

  • Analog Display
  • 18k Gold Plated Stainless Steel Case Polyurethane Bracelet with 18k Gold Plated Links
  • Gold Accented Arabic Numerals for 12, 4 and 8 hours and Gold Accented Hour Markers 39mm
  • Case with 14mm thickness
  • Mother of Pearl Dial
  • 22mm Bracelet Width
  • Fold-Over Clasp
  • Unidirectional Bezel Function
  • Swiss Quartz Movement
  • 3 Sub-dials for Date, Day and 24-hour
  • Water Resistant up to 330ft

The watch face is Mother of Pearl, which is lovely, luminescent and very hard to read–particularly juxtaposed with the gold Arabic numerals and hour markings. The face also has three sub-dials for day, date and—weirdly—24 hour. This is likely not for functionality, as anyone who would legitimately need to use a 24-hour dial (pilots, naval officers) would most certainly want to be able to see it clearly, but if you are among those rare creatures that like their GMT-featured watches pale of face and loose of wrist, this is the timepiece for you.

The piece has a unidirectional bezel, for all of your dive timing needs. I will be eternally confused by the inclusion of utility features in an ambiguous way on what is obviously meant to be a trendy fashion watch. None of the features, while pleasing to the eye, can be used efficiently.

The case is 18k gold plated stainless steel, and the bracelet is black polyurethane with 18k gold plated chain links. It is a standard woman’s size, but might have to be refitted if you have a smaller wrist, and will certainly have to be refitted if you intend to use it for diving (although 330ft water resistance barely qualifies it as a diver’s watch). Invicta charges $10 for re-sizing, which is not a warrantable service. The combination of black polyurethane and gold plating is surprisingly inoffensive due to the polyurethane’s matte finish. I typically dislike the combination of patently utility and luxury materials, but in this case, it works. The black of the band offsets the almost creamy quality of the yellow gold nicely, while lending a bit of aesthetic muscle to a piece that might be overly fussy with a paler bracelet.

This is a high quality piece that best serves as a fashion accessory, although the Swiss Quartz movement keeps accurate time, if you are interested in that sort of thing. Form has truly bested function – but with smartphone clocks so readily accessible, does it really matter? The Invicta Corduba White Mother of Pearl Dial Black Polyurethane 18k Gold Plated Quartz (whew! Say that 10 times fast) is simply a stunning piece of jewelry that also happens to have a nifty little time keeping feature.
